Preparing for Your Appointment and Caring for Your Style Afterwards

A little preparation before you sit down in the chair makes every service smoother and helps your style last longer. Most of what matters happens at home, in the days before and the weeks after your visit.

Before you arrive

  • Come with clean, detangled hair unless your service includes a wash. Product buildup can make braiding and parting harder and can affect how color or a silk press takes.
  • Bring inspiration photos, and photos of styles you did not like, too. Both help the consultation get specific about length, size of parts and finish.
  • Mention any scalp sensitivity, recent chemical services or medications that might affect your hair or skin. If you have ongoing scalp irritation or unusual shedding, it is worth checking with a dermatologist as well.
  • Plan your time. Braids, starter locs and bridal trials can take several hours, so eat beforehand and bring something to keep you occupied.

Keeping your style healthy

Protective styles protect your hair only if the hair underneath is cared for. Keep your scalp clean with a light, diluted cleanser. Moisturize lengths regularly. Avoid leaving braids or twists in so long that new growth begins to mat at the root. Wrapping your hair in a satin scarf or bonnet, or sleeping on a satin pillowcase, cuts down on friction and frizz for nearly every style on this page.

For silk presses and blowouts, humidity is the main enemy, and Boston summers bring plenty of it. Skip heavy oils, refresh with minimal heat, and keep a shower cap handy. After color or deep-conditioning treatments, gentle sulfate-free shampoos and cool rinses help the results last.

Choosing the right service

If you are not sure where to start, a natural hair care appointment is a good baseline. A healthy trim and an honest look at your texture often show whether braids, locs or a press suits your routine and lifestyle. Our hair care guides go deeper into wash-day routines and protective styling. If you are planning a day out in the city around your appointment, the neighborhood venues section has ideas across the South End, Roxbury, Dorchester and beyond.
